Some QuestionsSat, Jun 11, 2005; by Anthony.Cryonics has revolutionary potential. If it becomes acceptable, fewer people will be defined as legally dead. Medical, religious, and legal practices will change and people will have to think more about their personal beliefs, like: Would the Last Rites be appropriate? What happens to a person's will? How do hospitals logistically deal with this new procedure? And so on). Regardless of such changes, most people seem to want to live longer, as illustrated by the fact that most people try to stay healthy and accept medical treatment as needed. This implies that many people would want to be cryonically saved if it was a widely available and understood option. There are also questions about what would happen if we could revive preserved patients, such as: How would they fit into the future world? What would it be like to lose consciousness in a hospital bed and then wake up in the future? Is this really the original patient waking up? What about the patient's loved ones? These serious and complex questions are frightening, even disorienting, but we should not be afraid of exploring them, considering the potential rewards. Back to: What is Cryonics?
