The Myth of Sybil

Sat, Aug 27, 2005; by Anthony.

The advent of improved longevity techniques should not only increase the life-expectancy of humans living through the typical life-span, but should also increase the life-span itself, allowing human beings to live much longer and healthier lives. These lives could be less prone to diseases and aging, resulting in a long-lived population of youthful adults who only experience death as a result of suicide and accidental or intentional killing (and even then the individual might be preserved). Long and healthy life is the goal of medicine, so when medical advances reach the point of unprecedented longevity, should we stop for fear of the possible problems of longevity? Will psychological problems manifest in the long lived? What of unborn future generations? Will longevity cause overpopulation? Is the goal of longevity selfish or wrong? These are important questions of the present day. A philosophical investigation into experimental and advanced medical practices like stem-cell research, rejuvenation, and cryonics will help to shape an ethics of ontogeny.
